Fairy Trees - why do we still believe?

I visited the Hill of Tara on Sunday - the first time in many years are was reminded of running about here when we were young.  I was surprised to see a fairy tree festooned with all sorts of bits and scraps ianlcuding babies soothers (did they really want to leave them behind) and a sports medal.  I thought about all the wishes that were hanging on that tree.  Are we still just one step away from our roots? It seems that the fairy tree could be and answer.
