Passport Office Delays

Delays in the Passport Office have meant that the turnaround time for the Passport Express service operated through An Post has dropped back to 15 working days.  The normal turnaround time is ten days.

Demand has already increased this month and can partly be explained by the naturalisation of 2,900 people recently at the citizenship ceremony.  Temporary staff are being used to improve the turnaround period and the Passport Office expect a reduction in times in the coming weeks.  The Passport Express service is costs €89 including postage.

The Rapid Renewal programme introduced last year in Dublin has been extended this year to include Cork. Each day there is an allocation of 20 appointments for the one-day renewal service for people who are travelling within the next three days.  The appointments can be booked online from 2.30pm the previous day on passport.ie.  Monday is the busiest day in the two Passport offices with up to 200 people per day in peak season which begins from next month.

The passport appointment system will be available for people who need to travel within a 3-10 day period.  Appointments can be made online for Dublin and Cork and passports will be issued within three working days, the fee for both these services is €150 with proof of travel.  Counter service is €95 for travel six day or more in the future.

The Passport Office operates a renewal reminder service for people on passport.ie.  You enter your passport expiry dates and an email address and a reminder will be sent three months before your passport expires.

People are being encouraged to check passports before booking travel.  New passports take up to 20 days to process.

Travellers to Turkey are reminded that they must have at least six months before expiry on their passports from the day of arrival in Turkey.
